L'exposition From the Pearl of the Orient to Uptown porte un regard sur l'expérience de jeunes Canadiens d'origine philippine bouleversés par les séquelles d'une migration forcée. Tantôt ludique tantôt intime, les œuvres évoquent la reconstruction d'une identité culturelle privée de ses repères originels. Marissa Largo, en collaboration avec l'organisme de jeunes philippins Kabataang, explore ici comment, au coeur de toute cette mouvance, se forme et s'informe continuellement l'identité. L'exposition fait le pont entre l'art, l'engagement et la communauté.
From the Pearl of the Orient to Uptown looks at the experience of young Filipino-Canadians dealing with the aftermath of forced migration to Canada. The works make reference to the reconstruction of a cultural identity no longer tied to place. Bridging art, activism and community, Marissa Largo, in collaboration with the Filipino youth organization Kabataang, explores how identity is formed and informed by a world in a state of flux.

Cette exposition solo s’offre comme un pendant, un clin d’œil, un renvoi à l’exposition solo Écrans de l’artiste au Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal tenue jusqu’au 22 avril 2007.
Autant les étendues d’Écrans se déclinent en neuf œuvres murales de grands formats éphémères, autant les 13 Courts métrages du présent solo s’offrent en pièces permanentes encadrées de moyen format (40 x 60’’). Encore du papier recyclé ? oui, mais quel étalonnage.
C’est indubitable, les immenses Écrans du musée disparaîtront pour toujours lors du démontage (dé-montage). Aucun écrin envisageable pour les conserver dans leur majestueux état. Écrans déchirés, éteints à jamais.
Avec la nouvelle série intitulée judicieusement Courts métrages, l’artiste bricoleur-prestidigitateur spécialiste du plis, du replis et des jeux de renvois nous surprend à nouveau. Plutôt que de calquer l’expérience précédente, il préfère REmixer, malaxer, métisser donc compléxifier encore plus le traitement de ses images-source. La nouvelle combinaison-synthèse qu’il nous offre à la vue aujourd’hui mélange cette fois carnets de comptable, journaux espagnols, bottin des Pages Roses… aux affiches, carnets, cahiers à colorier, Mangas et cartes routières, des billets de Loto-Québec. Les effets spéciaux de ses nouveaux films de friction sont plus manifestes.Avec pour leurre visuel comme seul mandat, il fusionne et synthétise les sources précédentes et ses récentes trouvailles pour développer des tracés très graphiques et autres entrelacements de fines lignes inlassablement répétitifs.
La superposition de bandelettes horizontales est issue de la même geste et il nous appert tout aussi bien comme une métaphore du film cinématographique. Plutôt que le bout à bout du monteur, le collagiste-matiéristes Fortin préfère le plan en côte-à-côte, la superposition à l’horizontal et surtout le plaisir du fil(m) à retordre. Dans le continuum de sa facture moderniste, conceptuelle voire aux accents Optical Art et zen, l’effet est cette fois par contre perturbé cognitivement par la transposition, la reformulation, la traduction d’un vocabulaire-système volontairement SURbrouillé. Rappelons-le, le (mé-)tissage chez Fortin en appelle au tricot, au patchwork, à la courte-pointe ou encore à la ceinture flèchée (toutes pratiques d’un artisanat inscrit dans le traditionnel). Son métier d’art à lui (dextérité et façonnage manuel concentré et répété dans le temps) consiste à effacer toute détectabilité d’information précise pour mieux – comme il se doit dans sa démarche – nous berner. Impossible de syntoniser aucun Écran, aucun Court métrage.

explains the extraordinary feats accomplished by a group of dedicated citizens in the nineteenth century, when simple folk and freed slaves built a clandestine network to facilitate the escape of African American slaves to Canada. This network used the nomenclature and structure of a classic railway system. The staff of the Underground Railroad used titles such as conductor and station agent, while fugitives were described in terms related to freight.
